Across the Horn of Africa are some of the most diverse, beautiful and wildlife-rich ecosystems on the continent. Communities living in and around these rangelands and seascapes depend almost entirely on their natural resources to sustain a livelihood. Many have no access to immediate healthcare or education, and do not have the capacity or support to manage their areas.

The Biodiversity Management Programme aims to contribute to the reduction of poverty through capacity building in the sustainable management of biodiversity resources and by promoting regional integration in the environment sector through harmonisation of IGAD Member States’ activities in sustainable management of biodiversity resources. By supporting the coordination of biodiversity policies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, Uganda, Djibouti and Sudan, as well as working with partners at key cross-border sites, the IGAD BMP aims to empower local communities to manage some of their most valuable assets.
